Travelling with minors
What has to be taken into consideration if travelling with minors or if minors travel alone?
Infants sailing on board a Norwegian Cruise Line vessel must be at least six months of age. However, for voyages that have three or more consecutive days at sea, the infant must be at least 12 months old. For children of up to two years, cribs are available on board.
Company policy states that a guest under 21 years of age must be accompanied in the same, connecting or side by side cabin with adults guest, who is 21 years of age or older at the time of embarkation. If sufficient adults are sailing, an adult must be booked in each cabin (adult/child per cabin). Minors should only be booked alone in a cabin when there are not sufficient adults for each cabin.
For guests under the age of 18 travelling with an accompanying adult, who is not the minor’s parent or legal guardian, a Parent/Guardian Release Form (available here: ncl.com/ParentGuardianForm) that authorises the minor’s travel and further authorises medical treatment in case of an emergency must be given to a Norwegian Cruise Line representative at the pier during check-in. Failure to present the completed form at embarkation may result in boarding being denied, with no refund provided.
On cruises that include a Canadian port, guests under 18 travelling with a single parent have to provide a letter of approval (preferably notarised) from the parent not travelling. Please note that the form must be accompanied by a copy of both parents´/legal guardians´ driver´s licenses or other government issued identification. Adoptive parents, legal guardians or persons separated or divorced are advised to keep legal and other relevant documents available in order to clarify custody rights. Failure to present the relevant documents may result in boarding being denied with no refund provided.
Two people under the age of 21 may travel together in the same stateroom if they are a married couple and provide proof of marriage to a Norwegian Cruise Line representative at the pier before embarkation.
Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed to gamble in our casinos. Should a guest under the age of 18 gamble nevertheless and win, he or she, for reasons of law, will not be paid the winnings.
Children under 16 years of age are not allowed to enter the fitness centre.
The minimum age to use the Thermal Spa (sauna, steam room, hot tubs) is 18 years. There is no minimum age requirement for the access to the rest of the spa as well as the beauty salon or the use of salon services. For spa treatments a parent or legal guardian has to be present.
Please note that the bowling alley located inside the Bliss Ultra Lounge cannot be used by guests under 18 years after 21:00. This is due to the fact that the Bliss Ultra Lounge is an adults (18 and over) only club after 21:00, which means the presence of any guest under 18 years will not be permitted after 21:00. Furthermore, some bars and lounges on board Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Epic and Norwegian Getaway for example Spice H2O, are adults only (18 and over).
The minimum age to consume alcohol on board is 21 years for itineraries that include ports of call in the US, Canada or China. On all other cruises this regulation applies to guests aged 18 years and above with the exception of guests who are US, Canadian and Chinese nationals. On cruises that include ports of call in the US, Canada or China and with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii itineraries, Norwegian Cruise Line permits young adults between 18 and 20 years of age to purchase and personally consume wine and beer only while on board and with the consent of an accompanying parent. Authorisation will be given only when the accompanying parent completes the Young Adult Alcoholic Beverage Waiver form. This form can be obtained and completed at the Guest Services Desk on embarkation.
In the interest of the safety of your children, we would like to ask you to ensure the compliance with certain guidelines. Climbing on handrails and railings is not allowed. For environmental reasons please make sure that your children do not throw anything over board. Under no circumstances should a minor be left aboard the vessel, other than in the care of the vessel´s Splash Academy or Entourage programmes, while the adult Guest responsible for the minor leaves the vessel for any reason.
Tell me about the programmes for children
Freestyle Cruising isn´t just for adults. Kids get plenty to choose from, too. Our Splash Academy and Entourage, which are complimentary on sea days, offer safe, supervised environments where your kids can play, meet other kids and enjoy a variety of fun activities.
There are four different age groups: Guppies (ages 6 months-2 years; together with their parents), Turtles (ages 3-5), Seals (ages 6-9) and Dolphins (ages 10-12). Entourage is our programme for teens ages 13 - 17. Younger kids will enjoy things like painting, pizza-making and treasure hunts at Kid´s Crew. Teen´s Crew offers things like Wii™, Xbox™ and dance music. Programmes vary by ship and depend on the number of participants. Both programmes offer extended hours, so parents have plenty of time to do something other than be parents.
On Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Jewel and Norwegian Gem, be sure to check out our exclusive family entertainment with Nickelodeon™, where kids, teens and even adults will enjoy imaginative activities and entertainment, including interactive games and a chance to meet their favourite Nickelodeon characters like SpongeBob and Dora the Explorer.
Enjoy convenient babysitting service
A group-sitting service for children aged three to twelve is available for a nominal fee at night as well as at days in port. Private babysitting is not available. Please check the Freestyle Daily newsletter on board for the most updated hours of operation.
Parents with participating children who are not potty trained will be issued a beeper and will be alerted when the child needs to be changed (range is limited to on board ship). Please note that due to US Public Health regulations, children using diapers or pull-ups, including swimmers, are not permitted to use the swimming pools or jacuzzis.
